... snipped ... I am ready to buy a full ton DRW but need it to have the largest cab possible, so I can carry 5-6 adults in some comfort for long drives. I was looking at a Ram MegaCab but finding a lightly used one in the 3500 DRW category has been rough.
Functionality and durability/longevity are definitely more important.
I have a couple of comments. First, what else will you be doing with this DRW 1 ton truck when not camping with it? i.e. daily driver, sitting idle, working vehicle etc.
Next, conventional "wisdom" (based on experience both good and bad), suggests first you pick the truck camper TC. Because the world is your oyster, this is where I'd start. Look at floor plans that work for you and your family, then amenities/options. You have to get out there and climb up into, sit, stand up in, lie down and walk through and thoroughly inspect units to fully appreciate what you get (or don't get) for your money.
I recommend buying a used TC. Lots of great deals for gently used ones are out there. You only need a few things to score a good deal 1) know what you want, 2) search diligently 3) be patient and 4) be ready to make the deal when the right one presents itself ... and it will.
Lastly, the truck. Once you know what TC you'll be carrying, you'll know exactly what budget you have left and what truck specs you'll need. Then you can decide whether new/gently used, what specs and gas vs. diesel etc. might be best matched to your needs.
It's pretty easy to buy a TC and truck. It's much harder to make the money and then buy the right TC and the right truck. You have the benefit of doing it right the first time out.
