Dual Cam vs. Equal-i-zer question.

With the research that I have done, I am looking at these two hitches. I have an 800lb. ATV that I will sometimes be taking with me in the bed of my tow vehicle. With either one of these hitches, what sort of adjustment will I need to do when I switch back and forth between taking the ATV and not taking it? Would one be better than the other for this application?

How will the ATV affect my selection of the "size" of hitch I buy? I am assume I will size the hitch to my setup with the ATV. Will that then be too stiff when I don't take the ATV? The Equal-i-zer website points to the 90-00-1200 hitch for the weights I have with ATV.

FYI - I have a 2002 F250 Crew Cab, short bed, with 7.3l and 7000lb. max weight travel trailer.

Thanks....
  • The ATV will not effect your WD hitch size but remember your taking away 800lbs off your TV payload capacity. As far as the sag with and without the ATV I set up my DC with an unloaded sag and use air bags on the truck to return it to the same high before I hook up to my trailer
  • If I was in your situation, I'd buy a WDH to handle whatever your trailer tongue weight is and adjust it to tow the trailer without the ATV. Then, I would use airbags on the truck to support the weight of the ATV when it is in the bed of your truck.
  • It seems like the whether or not I take the ATV with me would affect the decision of what size my hitch needs to be. Wouldn't the weight that the ATV adds to the rear of the truck be the same thing as a heavier trailer tounge weight? On the Equal-i-zer web site, the three things that you input to determine the correct hitch to buy is: Gross Trailer Weight, Tongue Weight, and Weight of Cargo Loaded Behind Rear Axle.

I don't disagree that air bags might be the way to go but if I am within the cargo weight limits of my truck and within the weight limit of the hitch (say 1200 lbs assuming 1/2 of the ATV weight is behind the rear axle)shouldn't I just be able to buy the 1200lb hitch and adjust it so the truck is level with the load (whether I have the ATV on board or not)?

Am I thinking of this wrong?

x2 exactly. Remember to load the ATV 1st, air up bags to return to original height on rear. Then hitch up the TT and adjust the WD to set the front of truck.
