Just decide what the pin weight of the largest fifth-wheel trailer you might want is, and buy a truck that has that payload plus 750 - 1,000 lbs for passengers, fuel, stuff. AS noted for current trucks the cross-over is around 12k GVW on the trailer, between SRW or DRW - but the truck configuration makes a big difference. Regular cab gas 2WD 2500 can have as high or higher payload than a Mega-cab diesel 4WD 3500. Then, pick your drivetrain and narrow it down.
