I can only offer my personal experience. When we decided to go full time, we couldn't afford a new truck and trailer, so I went with the biggest diesel Dodge offered. I didn't want to find out in the future I didn't have a big enough truck. Went with DRW for the max payload and stability should we go with a 5th wheel along with the 4:10 rear end.
We decided not to go to a 5th wheel. We have no regrets but haven't needed the 4:10 rear. Our truck does not ride bad, but we also have weight in the bed. We are currently perfectly matched with our TT. No regrets with the truck we decided on.
We are in a very similar position as yourselves.. we don't need a new TT right now, but we do need a new truck. As with you we dont know what lies ahead as far as new trailer purchases go so we want to leave our options open. If we want a 5'er as big as a house then great.. our truck will tow it. if we keep our 7,540 lbs gross weight TT then great.. the truck will tow it!
BTW.. this truck will not be a second car. It will be for towing our TT only. We are not full timers but we also don't change a vehicle just because its out of fashion. We want to buy this truck, treat it with TLC and make it last as long as possible.
