I've hauled my trailer up steep, 25-35mph, Appalachian grades in 2-3rd gear. You're saying the 68RFE tranny isn't locked? Wouldn't that lead to high tranny temps?
As you say, 2nd and 3rd gears do lock and the exhaust brake comes on to maintain speed on the downhill. Also first gear is never locked and there's no exhaust brake as a result.
EDIT: Or ar you talking about a hard acceleration through gears rather than a long pull in a single gear?
