I believe that's always been the case. In the past we were just lucky the OEM's were limited to the same part sources we had access to.

Unless by dumb luck or some trickle down for commercial applications (like the Allison trans) this is totally the case.
One doesn't have to look further than some of the contortions for a simple filter change, or the fact that I have to jack up the trans and pull the rear trans support to get the trans pan off my Charger to realize this.
