OP here, to follow up. Thank you for all of the excellent advice. It seems that there is a good cross section of opinions and experiences. I went ahead and ordered some new tires today. Here were my final thoughts before ordering.
Yes, my truck would no doubt be more stout and track better near its tow weight ratings with an E rated LT tire. There will be day in the not too distant future (with a different truck and camper likely) that I will spend much more time traveling across our great country. Not quite yet though. However, my experiences with my previous two sets of tires on this truck (one OEM and one Michelin LTX replacement set both P rated) have been good. I have towed my camper (about 5500 loaded) from the Midwest to the west coast a couple of times in the last few years and the P tires have worked flawlessly. No feeling of weakness or floating from the rear tires. I typically air them up a bit before towing . Secondarily, my truck is used for a daily driver and ride quality was of significant importance. I think with a P tire I will get the best of both worlds. . That should give me enough capacity to tow what I tow, and enough “in town” ride and handling quality to fit the particulars of my current life style. My son has E rated tires on his Chevy half ton and that thing rides like a school bus around town…..that just scared me from going with E rated this time. I thought that since the manufacturer decided that P rated tires were sufficient to meet the capabilities of the truck when new, they should be good enough now.
Clearly, I way over thought this whole thing. But isn’t that what we do?
I just ordered a set of 4 Hankook ATM RF10 P265/70/17 tires from Discount Tires Direct..
4 X $149 = $596. No shipping charge and no tax. Hard to beat that deal. I will have local NTB Install them for $15 a tire.
Thanks again from your great feedback. I appreciate it.
p.s. I believe that this may constitute my 200 post thus earning me the coveted “Senior Member” status. It only took me 7+ years to get there!
