Early sound systems in vehicles

I remember riding in a '60's Mopar, that had a little record player that ran 45 rpm records. It was under the Mopar dash. I remember being surprised that the record didn't skip when the car hit bumps. This was a Chrysler Co. option, before the advent of car tape machines...like 8 tracks and cassette players.

Any other memories of early sound systems in vehicles ?

  • Probably aging myself...but...My dad bought an Oldmobile in the mid 80's that came with a Cassette player. Included in the car was a tape called 'Oldsmobile' and had songs from Willie Nelson and Michael Jackson and several others.... We wore that tape out traveling. Lol

My uncle had an 8 track player installed in his 80's car since he had buckets and buckets of them...thought that was strange. Lol

    Thanks!
  • AM radio that sort of picked up a couple channels. Mostly at night.
  • Associated with factory radios I remember growing up in the 70's with the integrated radio/CB/mic that cam with many cars as an option. Lots of fun playing with them as a kid. My brother had a CB in his room with a roof antenna and we (brothers) would talk with my dad when he was in his car. He would radio us if he was in range.
  • That's just too fancy! I was happy to have a reverberator(sp) hooked to the radio, playing on a rear deck speaker. :)
