Your hitch should be under 30" with the set-up you have in your profile. I would leave it on when dropping the camper in my opinion. The longer hitches, 36" and above, I would remove. It take 5 minutes to loosen (2) turn buckles, pull (2) hitch pins, and pull out the 2 piece hitch assembly and place it in the truck bed.
