Idling has next to nothing to do with carbon problems on the valves on DI engines. Again, these are stratified charge engines so there is very little fuel going in at idle. People hear that idling is bad for diesels so it must be bad for gas engines. Gasoline just does not burn like diesel so it does not have the cold idle problems like diesels do.
Ben is right. It's any contamination like PCV and EGR and fuming or any other contamination that I mention. All of the above can build up on the valve and cause problems.
Water injection may be coming back in style! :B I know if I had one of these engines I would check into putting one on it.

I agree with the above and either a throttle body injector or multi point injection can be added as a work around. Also there's various methods to remove oil vapors from the intake charge to assist as well.
