Since Chevy stopped producing the old style RWD, 5.7 liter (350) V8 Caprice police car in '96, Ford has pretty well had their way with the police car market in North America. They have done well and the latest Interceptor (Taurus) with AWD and the turbo 3.5 liter V6 is impressive...although many LEO's prefer the comfort of the old CV.
The Caprice is back, as a police-only vehicle, available with either the 3.6 V6 or 6.0 V8. I beleive it's actually manufactured by Holden in Australia. It does lack the AWD of the Taurus Interceptor. I would think that AWD would be a huge advantage in a police vehicle, especially in my area with its infrequent, but wet and very slippery snowfalls.
Quite right. Chevy does have the new Caprice RWD police package. Not available in Canada though, although Ford and Dodge police packages are sold ...and a lot of them are sold...in Canada. Believe Chevy just sells the Impala and Tahoe police package up here.
I'm an unabashed Chevy fan, but I have felt for a number of years that
Chevy...which at one time....the 1990's up to around '96 (last year of the former Caprice RWD....was very competitive with Ford in police package sales across North America.
Since then Chevrolet just doesn't seem like they're trying very hard in this important market. Essentially they seem to have given up the market to Ford. Ford, IMO, have done an excellent job in developing and marketing police packages for North America.
AWD as you say is an advantage for police vehicles. I know a few Canadian LEO's, both city and rural...in snowbound Canada and pretty well to a individual, they prefer the handling of an AWD vs FWD /RWD police package.
