electric awning

Has anyone changed from a manual to an electric awning? I have had two RVs and nothing but problems trying to get the awning out or back in. So for Christmas we are going to buy an electric one. Push a button and it goes out and push a button and it comes back in. Where is the best place to get one and what prices have people paid to have this done? My present one is 16 feet wide. Thanks for any help or advice in advance.

  • After getting a manual awning on my new motor home, that gave me a lot of trouble unrolling while traveling down the highway the dealer installed a new elect for $4oo and my used awning. I like the power better I have had several of each. It rolls up if it gets too windy, but I can do it from bed if a storm comes up in the middle of the night using the remote.
  • I'm with those above who dislike the electric awning. The convenience of being able to extend the awning on our 5er without DW standing on a ladder is nice but these awnings are much more fragile in wind and heavy rain.
  • x3 for the dometic 9100,here is mine tilted halfway for runoff, should be able to get one installed for about $1300.00
  • We have the electric awning now and love the convenience of it, but I can't angle it downward. Positives are the ease and time to extend and retract, arms are not in the way when extended. What I don't like is I can't adjust it, and the manual override is hooking jumper cables to it and moving it that way. Mine does not have the automatic dump but I just keep one side locked and the other unlocked. Overall, I don't mind it but I don't think its worth an extra $1000.

There are 2 types of electric awnings.

One type just extends and has an automatic dumping feature that allows one end of the awning to collapse when there is a rain water build up on the awning. The problem with this type is that you never know which end of the awning is going to drop and allow the water to run off. Many of my friends, with this type, have been soaked when the awning dumps. Also you cannot adjust the height of this awning to compensate for the sun's angle, it just extends straight out.

My preference is the Dometic 9100 electric awning. There are two adjustable arms on it that permit you to slope the awning so rain water drains off the end you choose. Also these arms allow you a 24 inch adjustment on the height of the awning so when the sun is low you can lower the awning to get more shade.
The Dometic is available from Camping World for $982.

X2, have had both of these and the manual one. The dometic provides almost as much adjustment as the manual one we had. I hated the carefree power awning it was useless so we hardly so used it
  • We thought the electric would be wonderful but alas like some if the other replies, we quickly decided we like manual better. Rain adjustment for one, also it never felt like it was locked down when it was out and even a small amount of breeze caused it to flip like it was going to tear the arms off. Maybe ours needed adjusting, but we still decided manual was better.
  • me too, I have electric but would have got a manual if I 1 ordered it and 2 if I thought I didn't need to be 11 foot tall to operate it on my Th.
  • I have a Carefree electric on mine. It works great but to be honest I think I would rather have a manual one. You have a lot more options for tilting and adjusting.
if you go electric, the Carefree Travel'r is the way to go.
**Edit: Carefree Travel'r only comes with the adjustable arms. They no longer make the flat pitch.
  • Actually I liked the manual awning in my TT better than the electric awning in my MH. It had more adjustments.
