Elkmont Evacuation

While at the Smokey Mountains we were told to evacuate behind the snow plows

  • Some parts of the GSMNP for over 2 feet of snow and had snowdrifts that were over 4'. Probably a good thing that you evacuated.

That has happened to us a few times over the years for snow but not usually this early... A couple of times we had to evacuate due to flooding of the Little River... One year the flooding took out the whole roll next the river. Came back in a couple of days and found tents and all kinds of camping gear scattered down stream from ELKMONT...

  • Was out camping this past Friday and Saturday. Went to one of my favorite locations in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta and was told when I went to one of the lakes that they were shutting the road down for the season as a big storm was moving in, but would let me take one last drive.

A couple hours later at another part of the park a Warden came by and let me know that if I wanted to stay were I was that was fine but it may be a day or two before the plows got to me as a major storm was moving in. I was tempted to stay there but had some meetings on Monday that I need to be at.

Nice thing about having everything with you is that you can stay in a place for a few days without a problem.
