Engine light on day after filling DEF tank

I want to say something like this happened on my '15 6.7, and I hope it's the same thing.

Filled up DEF tank w/ 5 gallons (gauge read just above 1/4). Drove it home ( several miles) after a couple errands. No problem. Drive it to work (12 miles), no problem. Start it up this morning to come home from work and the "Engine" light is on. Drained water/fuel separator (per manual as a possibility)----no water. Went to dealer (can't get in till 130 today), but service writer put code reader on it. Tho he didn't tell me exact code, heard him saying something about a "PTS" code. He asked tech real quick and he had no clue.

On my '15, I think something similar happened after filling DEF up, and day or 2 later engine light went out. Does this sound about right? Timing is horrible as we are to leave tomorrow on vaykay. Have others experienced the same thing?
  • Not nearly enough info on which to base an answer. Where did you get the DEF (jug or truck stop pump) and, if in a jug, what was the date on it? You're likely to get fresh DEF at a truck stop pump since they are very high-volume and truckers aren't going to put anything iffy into those expensive tractors. It's sometimes difficult to determine the "chain of custody" and storage conditions with DEF in a jug depending on where you bought it. Doing a quick search, I can't find any references to a "PTS" code relating to Ford PowerStrokes. You might ask the same question(s) over on the Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forum and see what you get.

  • DEF was purchased at Pilot. Took truck back to dealer and they just called and said that appears to be a connector someplace (don't know where tho) and based on diagnosis/computer, should not pose a problem. They cleared the code, pulled truck out and engine light was back on. Have seen something similar like this on our semis and go for sometime before it got fixed. Supposed to leave around 2am for FL. Would hate like the dickens to have the computer on truck/DEF say while in transit "Guess what, your all done, pull over ASAP".
  • Dont know if 2015's are affected but just got a letter from Ford about the engine light on my 2012 due to a problem with DEF sender. Its program 18M01 you may want to ask your dealer if yours is affected.
  • I was going to post that it may have nothing to do with your DEF fill.
  • My 2011 6.7 had a check engine light due to the DEF tank heater was bad.
  • We have a 2015 and had problem with computer saying def low with full tank, it was the sending unit in tank and had to be replaced as truck went in to limp mode, it is a common fault.
