Unless it's a very large, accessible storage bin, I could not imagine lifting the hitch head into one??
I too put the hitch head in the trailer coupler when camped. Considering you lift the back of the truck some when hitching up, I don't think the weight of just the head is going to do any harm.... ;)
I put the lock on the coupler and I have a locking pin for the shank and I spin it around as much as it can so the shank isn't sticking out as far. Since I have the standard WD bars with chains, I also lock the chains to the safety chains and the e brake cable, just so they don't grow legs and walk away... :)
At home, the all go into the garage. The head on the floor and the bars on a rack I made.
