EternaBond ROOFSEAL tape?

I used the EternaBond brand stuff... not sure if there is a specific "roof seal" fromthat company that is different from just plain ole' EternaBond.

I thought it would have been compatible with the bubble material too! I cleaned everything very thoroughly... had to be careful with the acetone on that bubble material as it started to slightly dissolve it when wiping it with a rag. I assumed that it was "really" cleaning it beyond the surface.

I think I need to do something about the appearance. The tube-pooky seals it so there are no leaks, but it look awful... I am selling the camper and I have to explain the situation when possible buyers question it.

d3500ram, that's a bummer! But, thanks for the pics and the information on your experience. Was the tape you used the EternaBond RoofSeal or some other product?

This data sheet says that EternaBond RoofSeal WILL stick to the plastics listed. I wonder what went wrong with your application?

I suppose if you use it, it does have to stick. Plastic is a different kind of material. I don’t know if eternabond says to use it on that type of bubble or not.

I give you the "ugly."

I read and heard that EternaBond (EB) is the cat;s meow and perhaps its true, but I doubt I will ever use it again. I wanted to try and reduce my roof sealing maintenance chores so I bought a roll. Read about how good preparation is key. I chose a nice sunny warm day and started around the rood bubble over the shower near the adjacent plumbing vent:







I scraped away all of the old caulking, THOROUGHLY cleaned and de-greased the the roof and bubble and carefully cut and laid down a layer of the EternaBond to try to make it look neat and good- forgive me the late day shadows:





I was kinda' proud of the job in cutting rounded corners, lapping it properly for proper overlay (starting at the rear.) All was good until I inspected it a couple of weeks later when I noticed that the ED did not stick at all to the plastic bubble!

I know that EB is a pressure activated tape so when I put on the bubble I was sure to place the tape over the flat part (not running it up the sides.) I used the thinner wheel roller (the one similar to a wide but serrated pizza cutter) and was sure to apply pressure around any of the bumped up fastener protrusions.

The EB was adhered pretty good to the roof but not at all to the plastic bubble. I had to do something because the area where the tape did not seal was creating a pool under it. I tried to remove the EB but the areas where it decide to stick was a nightmare to remove; the part on the bubble came off with no problem as there was absolutely no adhesion at all. I manually scrapped off as much as I could and put down good ole' reliable and pliable roof caulk seal...

...but it looks like arse!!

You know I never took any during or after the job (this was a DIY project). Our Glendale Classic had a one piece aluminum roof and after giving it a thorough cleaning, I removed as much of the previous patching/sealing goop as I could although you can just tape over the old stuff. I wanted it as flat as possible.

Just before using the tape, I also cleaned the roof surface with isopropyl alcohol to promote adhesion. I then taped the outside seams, joining seams (with the front, over cab nose) and around each roof protrusion (A/C unit, vents, antennas etc.) it went very well and was pretty easy to do. Took me a full day from start to finish including the prep work.

I sold that Class C the next year just before buying our current TC. By then it had went through all four Canadian seasons (including lots of rain, snow and ice) and it stood up very, very well. This stuff is commercial grade. I'd hate to be the guy who had to take it off.

The only recommendation I have is ... buy the 1mm thickness. I went with the thicker 2mm sealing tape and it wasn't necessary but this only became apparent once I started the job. My thinking at that time was thicker was better ... not necessary for this application.

I removed the dicor from all my seams and applied Eternabond and then dicor to the edges of the tape. so far so good.

Of course I am! And a 2000 mile round trip.

I'm looking at all alternatives before I act.

Eternabond is great stuff, but you have to use a cleaner that does not leave a residue. I use soapy water, then follow up with wax and grease remover from the body shop supply or enamel reducer. It also helps to use a roller to press it into the surface.
