eternabond tape

I just layed mine over the old caulk 4" material. Washed roof w/ Dawn soap and Cleaned seams w/409 1st and used a wood roller on outside edges of eternabond. Sticks perfect after 3 years.

I use a 3/4" wood chisel to remove the mounted old sealant. Care is required to not gouge into a rubber roof, metal, fiberglass and metal are easy. After removing old sealant brush out crack and wipe down with cleaner. When applying tape use care to line it up a section at a time. Use a wallpaper seam controller to compress the tape.

Can you use laquar thinner on a rubber roof?I hear it is very good to get it clean and stick better.

If you have at least 1/2" of grab area for the Eternabond you should have no problem going over the old caulk.

I was lucky, my caulking was pretty level. I just cleaned it with lacquer thinner and layed the 4 inch Eternabond right over it. That was 10 years ago and it still looks like new.

You do not need to remove the caulking. Fact that would be a big mistake. Just get the four inch wide tape, clean the surface and lay it on.

I removed all of the old caulk from my roof/cap seams before applying 4" wide Eternabond tape.

Make sure it's hot enough outside to help it stick/bond. I applied some in weather that was cooler (60s) and it never bonded correctly. By the time the warm weather hit, enough dirt and******had gotten under the tape that I'm now having to redo the seal.....not fun.

I remove everything so that I have a very smooth and absolutely clean surface to put the tape on. It also provides a hard/smooth surface to use the pressure roller to make the tape stick better. If the stuff under the tape is soft, you really can't put a whole lot of pressure on the tape to make it seal.

Takes more time and effort, but it's better to do the job correctly once, rather than have to do it over again because you took short cuts.

Eternabond won't bond to silicone caulk. It doesn't much matter though as long as you get a wide enough eternabond to bond to the material on either side of the silicone.
