Excursion v10 Tow Rating Question

So on the tow ratings guide, it shows the tow ratings of a 2005 Excursion V10 as 11,000 lbs. It doesn't clarify if that is with the 3.73 or 4.30 gears. I have seen some people on here mention its lower with 3.73. What is that limit and where do you find it?

What is the cost to change the gears on a 4wd X? Is $1500 about right?

Does the 7.3L Diesel have the same restriction on tow capacity for the gears?

  • OP, there is no limit with the diesel option, all 11k. However, the 2005 guide shows the 6.0L diesel as the engine available in the X for that year. I guess it is possible some 7.3's were placed in them early in the run.
  • I don't think they had the yellow stickers in 2005, that is a fairly recent addition. I believe that the X only came from the factory with 3.73 gears and that is what the tow rating is based on. I know a few guys that went to 4.30's and towing performance was greatly increased. Depending on where you have the work done, cost will be $1500-$2000 for both axles.

Folks generally agree that the X is under-rated considering it shares much of its running gear with the F-350. The limiting factor is the receiver, which IIRC is rated at 1100 lbs and cannot be changed or upgraded. How heavy is the TT you are looking to tow?

  • Have you checked your drivers side door jam for the numbers for your specific vehicle?

There should be a yellow sticker that shows your payload capacity as well as weights for from and rear axle.
