Exhaust brake on 2015 Silverado

Looking at new TV and the 3500 Silverado D/A is at top of the list. Not sure exactly how the exhaust brake works. I know what it does, but I'm not sure what you do to activate it. Is it on full time in tow/haul mode or can it be turned on and off regardless of tow/haul? I know there is a switch on the dash, at least it looks like a switch. I would go to the dealer and ask, but I'm not close to any dealer that actually has one on the lot and I'm not sure I'll get the correct answer from a sales associate. I thought this would be the best place to ask the experts.

  • Thanks Jim. Sounds impressive. I have the earlier less aggressive version ... I am very fond of it...
the steeper the grade the greater the fondness.

Does this replace the grade braking feature ?

Grade braking with the Dmax/A is a VVT system braking "Variable Vane Turbo" which acts like a exhaust brake. Early Dmax/A used a low performance program. The newer Dmax/A uses a very aggressive VVT program for much more turbo braking performance.
The program holds the turbo vanes closed longer and at a greater angle than earlier grade braking VVT programs. The Allison keeps the TC clutch locked during the event.
    Great feature.

Fords also uses a VVT system as a exhaust brake.

Dodge/Ram uses a similar VGT (variable geometry turbo) system with a sliding nozzle for exhaust braking. The TC clutch stays locked with the auto tranny (Aisin or 68RE) during the event. The G56 manual tranny has no TC slippage so it works full time in forward and reverse gears down to zero mph.
  • I have the new 2015 Dmax, you,ll love it,great interior, goes like a rocket, smooth shifting, great exhaust brake.Put it in tow haul mode and the exhaust brake is very aggressive.
  • In tow/haul mode or downshifting quicker on the shifter will result in more aggressive Exhaust braking. Its more effective at high RPM.

I have the 2015 GMC D/A and when you activate exhaust brake with the switch on the center dash, it then automatically senses you taking your foot off the accelerator and depending on speed or descent etc., it applies the exhaust brake. I can feel it come on when approaching a stop sign for instance before I even hit the brake pedal. Its cool, I like it.

    OK, thanks for that.
That's how the rest of them work as well.

The switch activates it independent of the tow/haul. Once activated it does its thing when you press the break peddle.

You mean the EB doesn't come one unless you press on the brakes?
