Exhaust Brake question?

My 2014 Chevy 3500 Silverado Dually (Diesel) came equipped with the brake exhaust. I've not used it yet. (Truck has less than 1700 miles so far. I've towed the trailer a few times now, with the Integrated Brake Controller and tow-mode, it's a really sweet ride.

Someone mentioned on another thread to run with the Exhaust Brake on. This is the first truck I've had that has this feature. And I'm clueless. I suppose I should turn it on and see what the difference is. Meanwhile, (this may sound stupid, but I really don't know), when do you use it, and why? and what does it do? What's the difference between tow-mode, that will keep the transmission from shifting up on down hill stretches and "brake exhaust?" Is the same thing as down shifting, only it does it automatically for you? Like I said, I'm clueless.

Any help greatly appreciated.
  • What does your owners manual have to say about ;exhaust brake', 'tow/haul mode', 'cruise control' etc.? Lots of info about your particular truck in that manual.

My exhaust brake is aftermarket....I push a button on dash to activate control then when I let off of go pedal the exhaust brake closes creating backpressure which slows vehicle down. With it and in tow/haul mode I can descend a 6% grade holding 45 mph towing 14K 5vr and not have to use brakes.
Sometimes I even have to get it a little go pedal.

Push the button....try it out. You won't hurt anything.
Try the tow/haul when not towing/hauling anything
Try the exhaust brake..towing or not
    Push the dang button
  • I have a chevy c4500 with the duramax engine and allison transmission.

I leave my exhaust brake on all of the time, even when not towing. To me it adds a little bit of extra safety. I can let off the throttle and the truck begins to slow quite a bit. Almost to the point where I don't have to use the brakes.

Try it you'll like it. I tow a 15000 lb 5th wheel and the exhaust brake will hold the speed downhill at 55 MPH on a 6% grade... I never have to touch the brakes.

One tip- the exhaust brake and the cruise control don't always see eye to eye when going up or down a big grade. I turn off the cruise control when I begin to climb or start down a grade.

im not sure how your chevy brake works. But on my dodge, i just push a button and its on. WHenever you let off the gas the exhaust brake kicks in and starts to slow the vehicle. you will want to use it anytime you to. Saves brakes.
