Exploding water filter

This is the first year my wife and I have stayed in our 2008 Spree travel trailer through the winter. We are in the Seattle area, so usually mild winters. We don't like the taste of our water at the RV park, so I installed a Camco in-line hose type water filter. I decided to move it inside for the freezing weather. I cut the incoming hose under the sink and installed the filter. Back in December we heard a loud pop and the sound of water spraying under the sink. I ran outside and immediately shut off the water valve and had a bit of a water mess to clean up. The filter had obviously burst at the seams. I took the water filter back to the local dealer and asked for a replacement. They said that I probably let it freeze and that it was my fault. Even though I had the cabinet doors open all night and the heat set to 60. So I bought another one and installed it. Three months later we heard the same explosion. This time during non freezing weather. I called Camco and they suggested I install new regulator before trying a new filter. I did install a new regulator but am afraid to install a new filter under the sink again. Anyone ever see these type of water filter burst?
