exposed battery

so I picked up a dep cycle for my camper (missing it from previous owner). upon getting home I realized that I must have measured something wrong because the battery box does not fit properly. we are heading out this weekend and im on overtime to get the time off. is there an issue leaving the battery exposed for a week or so (obviously excluding risk of theft) or should I hobo cover it with a Rubbermaid bungee cord contraption (obviously vented)
  • My tractor battery has been exposed (well several of them over the years) for about 30 years. No ill effects yet.
  • ^ winner winner chicken dinner. that will do it until I get home and have time to modify the tray

Place the battery in the tray and turn the box upside-down on the battery.

My batteries did not fit my sort of recessed tray as well. I just ran a couple of 1" by 1" by 36" angles across the top of the frame and now I can mount up to four standard plastic battery boxes side by side. The stick out a few inches on both sides of the tongue now.

My three batteries are inside one of these standard inexpensive WALMART plastic cases..

When you get back from trip then you can arrange to get a metal battery box across the top of the tongue area bolted into place.

My next UPGRADE for batteries will have an enclosed metal box like everyone is talking about (Including myself) for better thief protection...

  • I see lots of medium duty trucks running aorund with batteries mounted on frame rails and completley exposed. Apparently it does hurt anything.
  • There's really no problem leaving the battery uncovered. Maybe if I was parked and it was going to rain I might set a piece of cardboard on top just to prevent any chance of a phantom discharge through the dust and rain on it.

  • There is no problem leaving it uncovered so long as nothing gets on it to short it out.
