Here's the way I see it.
Yes, agree, statistically the odds are the majority will never need/use an extended warranty and you're probably better off investing the money.
So, accordingly, statistically it also stands to reason the vast majority of folks making comments here about extended warranties have never been on the short end of a big financial payout for a major mechanical issue.
However, for that statistically, unlucky minority that's ever had a to pay for a major issue completely out of pocket, or for that statistically lucky minority that's had a major mechanical issue paid-in-full by an extended warranty . . . these extended warranties take on a very different perspective.
Me, I'm about $3000 ahead after deducting the purchase price of several extended warranties over the last 10 years.
You can call me unlucky or lucky--it all depends on perspective :)
