Extension cord for shore power

I'll be plugging in at a house on the coast for a few days in a couple of weeks. My shore power won't reach and I'll need to come up with a cost-effective but safe way to plug in. I was thinking about either buying a long shore power extension cable (expensive) or having a local electric shop make me big cable with standard house plugs and I could use my adapter. It's 30 amp. I don't have any experience in doing this so help is appreciated.

Why beware, it's a product made by Camco, a reputable company.
    Then it should be fine.
  • I don't think the correct questions have been asked.
    1. What do you plan on operating?
    2. What power source are you plugging into?
  • It should be ok, with good solid connections and decent cabling, but beware of Walmart products.

Why beware, it's a product made by Camco, a reputable company. Same company that makes RhinoFlex sewer hoses.

Here is a 50' rv 30 amp cord: link

You have to watch the distance you are running the cord. Here is a calculator for determining the correct size extension cord: link

    Good luck.
  • I just clicked on the Camco 50' 30 amp power cable from Amazon. It was less than $70.00 delivered and should be here Friday. Thanks.

Thanks, believe it or not, I didn't think of Walmart. Do you see any problem with doubling them up for 50' or 75'? Can it be too long?

A lot will depend on how much amperage you're drawing.

  • Your best bet is to bite the bullet and get a 30a extension cord..IF.. you're running a/c. The hot water takes a lot of power too.
  • I would get a adaptor and a extra heavy duty extension cord from Home Depot. That's what I'm doing right now.
