Extra Front Axle Weight

When we hit the road for an extended adventure (about 1.5 yrs away) I'd like to haul a motorcycle on the front of our truck (2004 f350). I'm wondering how much weight we could haul up there and not hurt the truck. Of course the amount of weight will determine the size of the bike we put there. And that is the real question; we'd like the bike to be large enough to be able to travel at highway speeds with some level of vibration-free comfort.

Our 5er weighs 10,000 lbs empty so maybe close to 12,000 when all loaded up for the trip

Does anyone have personal experience with this sort of thing? Thanks.

  • my guess.. after a custom front mount.. maybe 200 to 300 pounds.

you maybe able to carry a 400 pound bike... and What/ HOW to get bike up there.

the reason I went with a TT .. bike in bed of truck.. HONDA VTX1800F and ride up ramp. Toy Hauler was not an option for me/us.
  • I'd start with a trip to the scale. My 5er weighs 12,000# loaded.

I have the diesel 2004 F350 and I have no spare weight on the front axle to carry anything up front. V10 listed at 620# vs 6.0 listed at 966# so 340# difference in engine weight.
  • Remove the tow hooks and have a dual receiver fabricated in there place. Would have been nice to have a snow blade package installed.
  • The front axle is a Dana 60 with plenty of capacity, but you will not find a bolt up front reciever beyond 500 lbs carrying unless custom built. Which bike do you want to carry?
  • Since you have the V10, you can carry a full-dress cruiser up front, and still have less front axle weight than a diesel!

I wouldn't worry about it, except maybe consider upsizing the front springs.

Get a TH'r and take the Wing and 305 Dream! Chris
  • Most off the shelf front receiver hitches will have their capacity met or exceeded with that pig KLR flopping around on the front. The truck however has the capacity to carry it.

With the right structure, I wouldn't hesitate to pack around something as big as a WeeStrom on the front of my truck, but the Wing would be a little much.

I've stuck my XR400 (a little over 300lbs) on my front hitch before and think there was more of a mental difference than a physical difference.
