In some cases this is true and others it is not. One cannot say unless they actually test that theory. Until then, it is just an assumption and should not be taken as fact.
I keep meticulous records on both of my diesel vehicles (Ram 2500 & BMW 328D) via my aCar app for tax reasons. I have noticed that certain brands, mainly Chevron and Shell, do increase my mileage enough in both vehicles(about 7%) that I do come out ahead with the added cost up to a certain point. For example, even though some of the Shell stations may have a 10 cents higher cost($2.70 vs $2.80), the added average 7% improvement still drops my cost per mile by 1 cent. Not big, but add in the fact that my engines run better on their fuel and their stations are more convenient for me, and it is a no brainer.
I have not tried Exxon in a while so maybe it might be good to try it before winter sets in and changes my conditions
