F 150 exhaust manifold repair

I got my truck back from the dealer today and it appears as though they did a good job on it (with the exeption of the greasy finger prints on the door sill which they always leave!). Interestingly, I needed a new manifold since mine was not only leaking at the gasket, but was also cracked. Their price was $145, I could get it for $125, but didn't matter because they didn't charge me for it!!! AND, they comp'ed me a rental for a day and a half. Not sure what I did to engender such treatment, but it's done and I can move on with the next 100K miles. All for the low price of $902. Ouch!

Can't wait to see what breaks down next.

  • I meant the part itself:

    From Fordparts.com:
    Part Number: 9430A, RH
    Price: $294.75

    Part Number: 9430B, LH
    Price: $137.55

    On eBay:

    OEM 4.6L 3V V8 LH DRIVER SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD #6L2Z-9431-AA , $ 103.48
    OEM 4.6L 3V V8 RH SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD #6L2Z-9430-AA , $ 223.00

Maybe 5.4 manifolds are priced differently since the 5.4 3v application is much more popular and they sell a lot of them.

4.6 3v in trucks was used only on Explorers, Mountaineers and some F150s.
Also, one side, I think passenger is easier to work. Mainly because there is no steering shaft there.

I have the same problem with my 06 Explorer and 4.6 v8 with 181k miles on it.
Same issue on most of the Tritons: the studs just snap, manifolds warp or crack.
Interestingly, the passenger side is twice the price of the driver side. I am planning to attack it myself, but I am afraid I'll gets stuck at some point and will need to tow it to some exhaust shop. There is almost no room to put a wrench or a drill.
I heard some shops just pull the motor out to do that (on Explorers).

That was the issue I had. No garage to work in and didn't want it dead in the water in the driveway if something went wrong.
IDK, I'm pretty sure I remember looking on the Ford parts website and the two manifolds were very close in price. I could get one for $125 off the site. Where did you price yours? Or do you mean the total job was twice the price, not just the part?

Yeah, it's "like-new" quiet. Almost forgot what it 's supposed to sound like. Wonder why it's the passenger side more often? Maybe they need a flexi-pipe for the "y" crossover.

  • That's not too bad from a dealer.. I had just my passenger side done at a custom exhaust shop for $400 on my 97 5.4 and I supplied the parts! But, I had 2 broken studs in the head, so I wasn't going to do what the dealer wanted to do.. They wanted to pull the cab to be able to pull the heads to get the broken studs out... I laughed at the 2 grand quote...

I was going to do the driver side next, but ended up trading it for the 13 before I did it (about 3-4 years after doing the pass side)..

Bet it's not 'ticking' anymore! :)
