The following is my opinion developed from on line and Ford owner's manual reading--your may vary.
Gasoline engine and diesel engines require different oil blends because the catalytic converters are different--you can do damage using the wrong oil. CJ-4 is the current diesel spec. Many of the major brands even show the Ford spec number on the container.
In every brand of oil that I have looked at:
15W-40 is full dino oil
10W-30 is semi-synthetic
5W-40 is full synthetic
10W-30 is the Ford factory oil and what most dealers stock in bulk. My dealer the largest in Indiana did not stock 5W-40 until I showed up requesting it. 10W-30 is not recommended by Ford for any Bio-diesel which is pretty hard to avoid in the mid west.
15W-40 is not recommended below 20 degrees.
10W-30 is not recommended below 0 degrees.
I run Rotella T6, 5W-40 full synthetic, at 7500 mile intervals. Oil analysis has recommended extending to 10,000 mi., but I stick to 7500. Rotella is way less expensive than Motorcraft--changing more frequently than the oil analysis recommends with an oil that meets spec. reassures me. I would use Motorcraft if I could find a less expensive source.
