There's a rather lengthy thread addressing this issue on our 1500 diesel forum. It was initiated back in July. Old news. This situation is actually not uncommon in many Diesel engines and there are mods available for all brands if bypass becomes excessive. The individual spotlighted in the link would probably do well to look into one of these aftermarket units. This utube clip got a lot of attention on our forum & several members installed some aftermarket mods out of knee jerk reaction rather than actual need. We're fortunate to have a knowledgeable engineer amongst us & here's his take on the situation:
Well, I think it is too soon to say "effectively". Also, unless your Ram has an oil consumption "issue", there's no need at all and absolutely no benefit to this mod. (If you are not using any oil then there's nothing to catch - duh!) In a quick survey of owners, most if not all owners were citing 0 - 1/2 quart of consumption across the 10,000 oil change interval. Even at 1/2 quart in 10,000 miles, the atomization of this little oil across that many miles will NOT pose any kind of problem to intercoolers, turbos, DPF's etc. I suppose these are the results that the engineers who designed the engine saw. Now, if you are using a quart or more of oil across a 10,000 mile change interval, then a catch-can may help you but my claim is that you are addressing a symptom and not the problem. One of the highest mileage, self-proclaimed hardest use owners is reporting 1/4 quart of oil consumption in 10,000 miles. This mod is simply for the sake of modding in these "normal" oil consumption scenarios.K
