I agree the Diesel Ram will easily exceed it's highway numbers, the gas Ford would need careful driving, flat roads and favorable winds just to hit it's highway numbers.
I drive a diesel Passat rated at 43 mpg highway. I routinely get 46 - 48 mpg driving for work and on longer trips I've seen 52mpg without trying. Just driving 5 - 10 over the speed limit.
No gas vehicle I've ever driven has ever exceeded it's highway number for me. Most are a few MPG under the EPA number.

Personally I have had no problem consistently getting mileage equal or greater than the EPA numbers with the last several gas vehicles I have owned. I do let off of the accelerator sooner than most and coast when I approach a red light, but I don't hypermill, and I drive as fast or faster than 90% of the vehicles when driving. But I come up to speed gradually and coast a lot rather than brake to slow down, though I do not get in anyone's way.
The EPA did change the method of computing a few years ago -- I forget what year -- to make the numbers more real-world realistic.
I understand what mileage we each get is dependent on many many factors -- how we drive, where we drive -- how much stop and go, and I have also noticed that living in a hot climate, my mileage drops a bit in the summer months, when running the AC hard all the time.
