F150 EB vs 5.0 towing

Thinking about renting this next summer:

What are y'alls opinions about pulling this with a 2013 F150 5.0 3.55? Right now, our local Ford dealers are giving huge discounts for the 5.0 sometimes pushing 7k off versus a similarly equiped EB. Plus I'm seeing some issues with the EB especially with gas mileage unloaded.

I hope I'm not opening up a big can of worms with EB vs 5.0!

  • Do you own the truck already? If so, it should work, but I think you'd be happier with the 3.73. That combo gives 9300 lbs tow rating on my truck. Also, watch payload closely. My truck only has 1420 lbs payload so we don't load anything in the truck other than myself, wife, dog, dog bed, and maybe a few snacks. Everything else goes in the trailer or we'd be over payload. As it is, we are about 200 lbs under.
  • Wow, that was quick. Thanks. The 5.0 in question is 3.55 with the tow package. The Ford website rates this one at 8k.
  • Not only will you have no trouble pulling that TT with a 5.0 you will probably get the same mileage as an EB towing. A little less torque and HP won't make that much of a difference as the trailer will probably load out around 6K# mas y menos. I get almost the same mileage as an EB with my 06 5.4L non towing and the same or better towing our 5K# TT.

From everything I've read the 5.0 is a step up from the 5.4 which is without a doubt one of the best motors Ford ever produced. EB's remain overpriced and if buying new I would not hesitate to get the 5.0. :C
  • The specs look close to my trailer which I tow with my 5.0 3.73. It tows it well power wise. The transmission having 6 gears helps a lot. I lock out 6the gear and cruise at 63mph in 5th at 2000-2100 rpm or so and average 10-10.5 mpg so far after 1,000 towing miles. The trans will drop to 4th for medium hills and 3rd for big hills but the engine is not really screaming and will easily accelerate up 6-7% hills in 3rd at 60mph. I haven't had it over any big passes yet but live in a fairly hilly region and don't foresee any power issues with this setup even in the mountains. No doubt the Eco would have more torque, but I think the 5.0 will pull it fine. I haven't driven a 3.55 rear truck to compare, but I would error on the 3.73 side.

Where I'm not as in love is the trucks stability. I've gotten it dialed in pretty well now, but I did get blown around by wind more than I preferred before I tightened my hitch a bit. The stock p tries, soft suspension allowed more movement than I preferred. If you haven't bought the truck yet, I HIGHLY recommend holding out for an hd payload equipped model.
  • Yes, your post title will invite that "Can of worms". Maybe should have asked, "Can I tow this"?

The 5.0 will tow it just fine, just don't be afraid to let it rev up to 4000 RPM's or more when needed. I'd probably want the 3:73 gears though, and watch your payload/axle ratings. Good luck.
