I can't imagine why electric charge stations don't have credit card readers like virtually every gas pump in this country. I own a Tesla now so I will probably never use one of the other brands of chargers but I would be much more likely to if the process was simple.
GM has put together their own network of a consortium of independent charge networks but even they couldn't get Electrify America to play nice with them. If you could only fill up your ICE vehicles at certain gas stations it sure would be annoying.
