Let's start a list.
Bigger Stronger frame.
Bigger Brakes.
Bigger axles (you can't get the same running gear in a 150 as a 250 period).!

Bigger axles (Full floating NOT semi Floating) this is more bearing surface, and the axle only turns the wheel, the spindle of the axle carries the load.

Keep in mind a 150 Max/Max is just that the Max 150, the 250 is a derated 350!

Just because the truck looks big, doesn't mean it is big where it counts!
Not enough payload to carry either hitch weight. I can't imagine the thrill of towing 15,000# with a 150! :B

Many 150's should be able to tow a 27' TT. It sounds like the 15,000# you are referring to is GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) this is the total weight of the TV and the TT.

Seems we have had this conversation/discussion before...

With over 12,000 miles towing my camper and were still waiting for the frame to bend and axles to fall out from under this truck, plus the brakes are larger than your 2001 Dodge. Look it up as they are also electronically controlled disk too. E rated tires all way around including the trailer and no problems at all...not picking a fight just letting you know the F150 can be a very capable truck. Would a properly F250 or 350 be better...no doubt, yes, but the F150 is leaps and bounds better than ANY 15 year old 2500/F250...I know I had a diesel F250.

And you're as mis-informed as the OP.......unless I missed the "new" F250 with a 7klb payload rating. Whole truck only weighs 7-8klbs.

Your right about the 7000lbs, that was for F-350 DRW 4x2. My mistake on that. The highest payload for a new F-250 is 4040. The other numbers are right on target though. Please excuse my ignorance.

The axle tubes are pressed in and plug welded for both trucks last time I checked.

The bearings on a half ton are pressed on with a clip that holds it on in the diff and when over loaded they can peel right out. On 3/4 and above the axles are bolted in. Almost all 1/2 ton/150/1500's/1/2 ton use semi floating rear axles the drive axle serves two duties, spin the wheels, AND supports the weight on the rear of the TV. The single support bearing on each side is either pressed on or slipped on and held in place with a pressed on ring. The axle shaft is either secured by "C" clips in the differential or a retaining plate at the bearing.

Almost all 250/350/2500/3500 use Full Floating rear axles.
This design uses two support bearings per side and the bearings are supported by the spindle that is part of the axle housing. The bearings and hub are held in place by large nuts locked with a locking device. The axle shaft is attached to the hub with six to eight bolts, the only job of the axle shaft is to spin the wheel.

I figure I'll toss my 3 cents in here. (Inflation don't you know.) The numbers on the side of pickups are the maximum load they can handle. Now, you can option them to haul more weight or pull better, but the standard truck is what the numbers on the door say. A 1500 can handle 1500 pounds no problem. The brakes, chassis and drivetrain ad designed for it. I have a Ram 2500 and a F-250 both. The Ram will carry much more weight with no problem than the Ford as it has the heavy duty chassis package. It also rides like a log wagon. The Ford is an oil burner and will pull with the Dodge and pass it when the Dodge stops for fuel. It also rides better and has a sharper turning radius. Both trucks have a minimum load of 2500 pounds maximum. The Dodge can carry much more due to the optional chassis. It basically a 1 ton truck with single rear wheels. It has triple sets of springs in back compared to a coworkers Cummins Dodge or my F-250. I drive the Ford more because it rides better and gets better mileage.

The chassis on both trucks is much heavier and more stout than a comparable 1/2 ton. As another poster mentioned, the rear axles are completely different between 1/2 tons and heavier trucks. GM is bad about putting a 2500 rating on semi floating axles. The semi floating axle carries the weight of the truck and load. The full floating axle (that big tube that sticks through the wheel on heavier trucks) doesn't carry any weight, just turns the wheel. The rear wheel bearing carries the full weight of the truck and payload.

I would like to see a 6K rear axle rating on a F150 and I'd love to know what that guy was towing because it sure wasn't just a 27' travel trailer.

Refinanced several times to pay for buddies older brothers masters
and for my buddies PhD.

Helped them sell their orchard and the millions was beyond belief
for a dirt poor farmer...and at +80 years old...decided to buy
a trailer and visit friends through the Calif Central Valley

Advisers were discussing a Toyota Highlander and how it could tow
XYZ and 123 lbs with ease and no problems.

They were talking SECOND gen Highlander, which was based on the
Toyota Mini Van, Sienna...and...buddies dad bought a used FIRST
gen Highlander based on the Camery...

Received a call from buddy asking about HOW2 setup a WD Hitch
system for his dad's Highlander...they were on the side of the
road out on Highway99 somewhere

Talked him through it via cell...to find out later that buddy also
had problems and crawled to the next city...the swaying was so bad

These are bright folks...just not knowledgeable on towing

WHICH F150 half ton do you own?

They range from +6K GVWR up to +8K GVWR...which I call the 'fake
half ton'....a 3/4 ton normally has a 8.6K GVWR

The 'regular' half tons has 'P' class tires (passenger class
tires) that needs to be de-rated a min of 9% when used on pickups
and SUVs.

Fake half ton pickups has the next higher class tires, 'LT' class

'Regular' half ton's has +4K RGAWR...where as 3/4 ton has +6K
RGAWR...as does 'some' of the fake half tons at +5K up to +6K RGAWR


Tell us which class tires and RGAWR of your half ton?

My Silverado has a 6,200 GVWR and a +4K RGAWR

If that's the case then I take it fake means good. 2014 F-150 super crew cab, Ecoboost, 4X4 Off Road, Max tow, 7,650 Lbs GVWR, 1745 payload, 3750 front axle, 4050 rear axle, 11,200 lbs tow rating, and LT tires. But this is what I needed/wanted for towing my 6,300 lb GVWR Airstream.

Me too. And I LOVE IT! The power, the ride, the mpg. I was skeptical. After several trips, payload is too high aside, I am very pleased, impressed and more confident in this truck then any I have owned for towing, even better power than the v10 I had in my f450 jayco.... so yes, if you can afford and want more truck, it might be more IDEAL. but these suckers can tow.

Dennis Leary has put a lot of people into much lighter trucks than they realized at the time of purchase. When you hear that an F150 can tow 12,000 lbs you don't worry much cause you only want an 8,000 lb trailer max. Huge margin, right? Well...
