Good thing that you did your homework before buying the truck this time. So many do not, and end up with a 2500 series truck that can not tow a fifth wheel without the rear axle being over the GVWR. The 3500 should be able to tow a fairly large fifth wheel, that I see sometime in the next few years.
It helps to post the model year in the first post, so everyone will know what you are talking about. 3.55:1 rear end ratio is pretty high, and I suspect that the F-150 was shifting from drive to overdrive and back to drive frequently, thus overheating. If you had locked out overdrive when it was shifting back and forth, then it might not have overheated nearly as much. Also 25,000 miles you should be changing the automatic transmission fluid, often neglected item. But still the truck should have had the proper transmission fluid cooler factory installed.
I know that this Dodge should treat you better. Someone else will be enjoying that F-150 and hopefully they will not tow with it.
