F350 SRW crew 6.0 diesel, need help

I have a 2003 ford f350 srw with a 6.0 diesel, long bed. I've only heard negative things about the engine. I've had it for 2 years and had the turbo and fuel injectors done. I've replaced the hubs also. I do a lot of fishing on the beach and have had problems with driving on the beach in 4 wheel high. I air down to under 20psi. Does anyone else have a problem on the beach with this size truck? Also looking to put a lance 2003 830 on it. Will that make more problems for me on the beach. Thinking of getting a different truck, I'm losing confidence in the truck. Any ideas? I'll be a new to the slide on camper world. Thanks for any input.
  • I've got the same engine in my 2006 F350 and so far I've had a few minor problems (knock on wood). Yeah, you will have to part with some green backs to make it more bullet proof. As far as beach travels, the type and size of tires and rims with correct pressure is what you will need.
  • It's fine to use 4 lo with your truck and camper on the beach. Obv you don't want to go too fast. Or you can change over to a cummins and use all that low end torque and have no problems on the beach
  • I have nitto terra grapplers 305/60 18's. I air down to 18psi. When I stop and start to go I start to dig into sand. I air down more , results don't really change. I go in 4 lo, and I get out of the mess I was in. Always had 1500 size trucks , always used 4 hi on beach without problems. Is it typical to ride in 4 lo with heavier trucks or with a camper on the back? Thanks for the replies.
  • The motor is a piece of work to be polite. As said before plenty can be found on a ford forum.
I frequently take our F250 to the beach. I use 4W high. I have absolutely no problems with bogging down or getting stuck.. Now sometimes I forget and leave it in 2w drive until I start to spin then the switch over..
  • We have 16" Nitto Dune Grapplers as beach tires. We air down to 20psi front and 30psi rear, use 4X4 low range. We make wide turns, always stop on level sand never up or down slope. On Assateague Island we are required to carry a shovel, and 18"X18" 3/4" plywood pad, a jack to sit on the pad, and a sufficient tow line. We have been operating trouble free for 10 years, if someone here gets stuck someone always helps to get them rolling.

See www.youtube.com go to "Living the Lance Life" we are 3 of 4. You will see us operating in very soft sand. At 20 and 30 psi you can still air down a bit more if you hit a soft spot. Like snow and ice a soft pedal is needed, spinning wheels will bury up to the frame. Then jacking up and filling in under the wheels will get you rolling. Often backing a little then slowly ahead will free the rig.
  • Go to Fordtrucks.com to learn more about the engine. Basically, there are known issues with known fixes to keep from having them again.

There are quite a few people who drive large trucks with campers on the beach.
  • What kind of specific problems do you have driving on the beach?
  • I have a similar truck. I would be more inclined to use 4 low and 3rd gear in tow haul. what tires do you bave?
  • Welcome to the Forum:
The early 6.0 saga is well documented and old news..not really much debate about that.

What, "problems," are you having on the beach.?
