We travel with just our cat, but a lot of extraneous stuff I don't like to keep in the TT when we're on the road, and our CrewMax back seat is plenty big. The short bed is problematic when carrying big cargo (not towing), and the smallish gas tank can be a concern in the west, but otherwise it's been a great truck. We've sure been happy with it (going on 8 years towing with it now).
If you're generally happy with Toyota but want to get away from trucks, you might consider the SUV based on the (newer) Tundra (Sequoia?) And I would absolutely, definitely recommend the 5.7L with tow package.
