But what occurred to us on the 16-hour drive fromTexas to Colorado (and then back again) is that even with the double cab, that Tundra is not the most comfy vehicle to ride in for long stretches
What was it that you didn't like? Did you not like the seats, leg room, ease of storing and retrieving stuff in the vehicle while driving? Or was it the ride (bouncing, jarring, etc)?
Depending on exactly what it was that you didn't like, would change what my solution would be.
What I can tell you is that our trailer that has an unloaded weight of about 5400# made our half ton Suburban bounce, buck and jar at every bump and expansion joint on the freeway. While comfy inside, I don't think I would have wanted to do a 16 hour towing drive with it. That was 5 years ago and I only towed with that truck about half a season.
Today I wouldn't hesitate to take a long trip with our current tow vehicle. In fact, this past weekend returning from a two week camping trip (ie. two weeks worth of clothes for 7 people, a dog, 6 bikes, etc) was a nice leisurely 5 hour drive home with our 1 ton van and there was even 15mph cross winds.
While the half tons might be rated to now tow 8000# or even 10,000# and handle a trailer like yours or mine, they aren't going to do it as nicely as a larger tow vehicle.
FYI...I also find the front seats of our van as comfortable as those that were in our Suburbans.
