I've been towing a 30 foot super maximum ultralight bumper pull camper (4,600# dry with probably another 1,000# of the wife's stuff plus my one extra pair of pants and socks and some t-shirts) for a little over 4 years with a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab gas guzzler. Equipped with the "max trailering package" and none of the fancy Z-71 decals, the truck is rated to tow 9,500#.
It has been performing this duty with flying colors, and a decent amount of left over "juice" to give me a feeling of safety on the road. I will say that I've never towed through mountains, despite what the folks in Wisconsin might call the brief stretches of 1% grade scattered about the state.
The ride was very comfortable, and I could handle many hours of towing without fatigue.
Now that three out of the four kids have moved off to college, the wife tells me that we need a bigger camper, so I replaced that GMC with a shiny new Ford F-350 DRW. It's so dang comfortable, I've been putting off buying the commuter car I planned to get for driving to work.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, get a pickup truck. That's what I did, and I like it.
