I had a diesel X it was a fantastic vehicle however it does not compare to the modern diesels in terms of power and performance. Unless you are full timing and need the passenger space on a full time basis I would opt for a modern diesel pickup.
I also would not avoid DEF it is the pre DEF years that were a bit problematic. There were growing pains to reach the DEF era, but DEF has been reliable.
THe big 3 all currently use DEF with no real issues.
It is the DPF years that suffered with poor fuel mileage and moe emission issues. While not perfect DEF is a vast improvement over what preceded it.
I have a pre emissions Duramax which is a great truck but it does not have the performance of the newer models.
Just from real world experience I would stay away from DEF. Here is why.
Truck #1 2014 Ram cummins kept stranding my parents in limp mode. Had to delete entire exhaust system
Truck #2 2014 Ram cummins same thing. Had to delete.
Truck #3 2015 durmax same thing. Had to delete.
Truck #4 2014 powerstroke. Complete disaster had to sell the truck.
Truck #5 2006 cummins no issues.
Truck #6 2009 cummins no issues.
Truck #7 2005 cummins no issues.
Truck #8 2009 cummins no issues.
I know this is limited but it is my personal experiences with diesels. Kinda pulling a Forrest Gump here. I'm not a smart man but.....
From what I have read the DEF trucks are pretty reliable overall.
But I understand nothing supersedes personal experience.
