It protects them and allows them to charge more of their products than if they had foreign competition. I’m not arguing the rightness or wrongness, just the reality.
But they had nine foreign truck competitors with the chicken tax in place and still have three. There is no "if they had foreign competition" because they actually did and still do.
Also, it is not necessarily the UAW's interest to protect their employers markets. I am sure they don't care who is building the vehicle as long as it is being built in the US.
