Power absolutely nothing to do with higher or lower NOx? Huh!?! This is completely false! Lol, and you said I know nothing about diesels.
Diesels create A LOT of NOx due to their compression ignition which creates high combustion temps. When combustion temps reach 2,500F or more, NOx is being created and is also when the engine is running most efficiently. To lower NOx output, the EGR recirculates cooled exhaust gases to lower combustion temps which also lowers the peak performance and the efficiency of the diesel engine. This is why engines under less strict NOx emissions like the Euro 6 are able to make more power versus stricter NOx requirements like the US EPA regulations.
This is changing with the addition of better SCR technology since most NOx reduction will be after the engine and you no longer have to lower NOx in engine which decreases peak power and efficiency.
