I have read horror stories too, but then again I have read horror stories on just about every engine even from the two diesels that are arguably the most reliable diesels ever made, the 5.9L Cummins and the 7.3L Powerstroke. Of course you are going to have the people that are for it or against it, and as with anything the people that are against are going to only focus on the bad while those for it will only focus on the good. I believe that as long as you have realistic expectations of this engine knowing that you will sacrifice big block V8 or larger Ecoboost performance for better fuel economy then you are good.
Some want to have their cake and eat it too believing that their Ecodiesel is a powerhouse versus these engines which it isn't and was never meant to be. To them I say love your engine for the reasons you bought it (fuel economy and low end torque), not for the reasons you didn't(performance). When it comes to the fuel economy that it was built for, the Ecodiesel really does shine above the rest in the full size class.
