- Dayle1Explorer IISteel hauler beds are heavy so you loose carrying capacity, aluminum is very pricey. My custom utility bed only weighs 400 lbs more than the stock bed and is lower than the stock bed. It has more storage than a hauler bed, costs less. Oh, it is 12 yrs old and on the second truck.
- notevenExplorer IIIHi Vanished - you can buy beds with flip down/removeable sides.
- mkirschNomad IIThe big pro is that HD trucks these days sit extremely high and it is often a challenge to get a 5th wheel, especially older ones, to sit level and clear the bed rails. No bed rails means no clearance problems.
The big con is that if you live in a state where they use salt on the roads, it will be fighting rust right from day one. - VanishedExplorerI personally like the idea and don't care if my truck looks like a 'work truck' - as that's what it is and what it does.. ;)
I've looked a few times pretty hard but never pulled the trigger for two reasons - 1st is cost (although I could sell my bed) and 2nd is because it seems I need my bedsides for hauling dirt, gravel, hay, etc quite often..
I would love to have our horse trailer sit more level but I'm alway nose high to get enough bedrail clearance.. (as many others are as well).. - mdamerellExplorerYou don't have to help people move ;)
I'd like one for the storage compartments and being able to better reach my gooseneck. Some have building in aux fuel tanks and air compressors. - notevenExplorer IIIOften cab and chassis vehicles will have more suitable specifications for "truck work" vs personal use pickup trucks.
- HalmfamilyExplorerHauler bodies will usually have some storage under tbe body with lockable doors and have no clearance issues. With a truck bed you can still haul stuff once hitch is removed.
- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerThe up side would be clearance form not having a pickup box.
- 2oldmanExplorer IIYou may have to make your own rails.
