Thanks Jeff
My 3500 Silverado was very strange. I had to add DEF after the first 1000 miles. We were actually traveling with the trailer and it was a late Friday night. The DEF warning came on and I freaked. We were fortunate to find a GM dealership on our way still open. They had 1 jug of DEF in the shop and were even helpful enough to fill it for me the first time as I watched.
It did not fill the tank. They said on our return (which would have been Monday), hey would have more and I could stop and get the rest filled up.
Even they thought it was strange the truck used that much DEF in only 1000 miles. The best everyone could figure, when the truck came from the factory, they put just enough in to get the truck working successful. The dealership I purchased it from probably never checked the DEF level. Basically, it was almost empty when we bought the truck new.
So, we got it filled completely and it ran 3000 miles before the warning came on again. Very concerned now, I was still patient.
Next fill up was about 4000 miles. The next was 5000. It up to about 6000 miles now a fill up and seems to have stablized there.
Very weird I know, but that was my experience. My truck now has 33,000 miles on it. (Just got another oil and oil filter change yesterday.... first one I had to pay for ... out the initial warranty now. They topped off all the fluids, including the DEF. Next oil change recommended.... 5000 miles ... I still carry an extra jug of DEF in my truck when traveling. Even after 33,000 miles, I'm still learning the limitations of this truck.)
