I've searched the Forest Service and BLM regulations here in Utah and I have also spoken with the "people who know" in both agencies here locally and I would imagine they are pretty universal across the country and the the closest I could find in regards to dumping gray water is not within 100 yards of any brooks, streams, rivers or lakes.
I think you meant “should know”. ;)

Who is "gotta go"??
As per US Forest Service, looks like "they do know".

"GREY WATER
Is old dishwater, which should not be dumped just anywhere. To wash yourself or your dishes, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap.
Scatter strained dishwater.
In the backcountry be sure to dump gray water away from any fresh water sources and use biodegradable soap."
I was wrong. I thought it was 100 yards from water but its 200 ft.
