I moved out of California, but few years ago the state actually encouraged the people to dump household gray water into their gardens.
The crucial word is "holding"
Gray water, when household is using eco-friendly soaps is a blessing to the landscape starving for water in years of drought.
It is holding the gray water what gives bacteria time to grow and risking all kind of environmental hazard.
I build a system for 1 of my customers.
The main issue was washer, who would dump lot of water in short time, what system of small pipes would not distribute fast enough.
Food-grade barrels acting as overflow tank solved the issue.
Showers and kitchen sink could go straight to the garden.
