Financing a truck camper

I just realized that financing a truck camper isn't as easy as financing any other type of RVs in California.
Since California doesn't request a DMV registration on truck campers, my credit union doesn't recognize it as a vehicle and won't let me apply for an RV loan.
What is your experience with truck camper financing? Which banks are best to deal with for truck campers? How much down payment is usually required?

  • Yours and our Mendo Lake Credit Union made it real easy, no problem at all with a good rate. We work with the Lakeport branch but the policy would be the same in Ukiah. Good luck!
  • AnEv942 ,

Very good suggestion! I'm going in person to my Credit Union at the end of the week and follow your advice.

  • You will have to register your financed TC with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Its a one time fee of about 43 bucks. Our bank had to look up on the internet what a TC was and after that it was easy. We did it thru a CU.

    can't the dealer provide financing
  • Same thing in Illinois. No Title for the lender to hold, which normally secures a vehicle loan. It becomes simply a personal loan with higher rates.
  • Go back on Thursday and talk to some eles? Our local CU had no problem when we got ours. They are loaning money to make money-at least my experience with CU they are loaning against your ability to pay, they dont really want whatever your financing. If it needs to fit a catagory try Slide in Truck camper or trailer instead of RV. Most places that sell new campers will finance, though you probably need to check rates-which is why we usually go thru CU. Other than that no suggestions and am puzzled.
