Finished Grey Tank Upgrade

2016 Sunset Trail ST27BH. Upgraded the grey tank from 25 gallons to 55 gallons. An involved process, but went as expected. About $600 all in. Here is a short video showing the finished project before closing it up. Grey tank is on the left, and the black tank on the right with the new cable pull.

We exclusively dry camp, so it was a necessary upgrade with 3 women in the "house".

  • Clicky.

    Nice job!

I think we're going to add a second tank or two to our camper. Toss up fresh or grey, though...

Figure we can always add fresh water, but need the grey storage (showers?) ;)

Sounds like you were thinking similarly?

I would say grey for sure......depending on your water supply. It is pretty easy (and clean) to add 12 or 18 gallons of fresh water. Dumping and holding grey water is a more involved process. We used to have two 7 gallons water jugs just for that purpose.

Our fresh tank is only 40 gallons, but what is nice is I don't even have to look at the grey tank until we are out of fresh water...and then the most it could be would be 40 gallons out of 55 gallons available space. Even topping the fresh water off with an additional 12 gallons like we did last week, we still aren't to the 55 grey capacity. So no more nervous watching while the kids are showering....if there is water running, there is room.

A couple things we do to save fresh water is to "prime" the black tank with 6-10 gallons of water. This way when dumping waste we just have to remove the waste with a little water, and there is plenty of fresh water in the black tank already to help dissolve the waste. And we carry two dedicated fresh water jugs full of water. This way we can get through a night if no water is available at the campsite (like last week in Sequoia when a water main had ruptured).
  • Nice gray tank but lets move on to the aircraft carrier simulation. Was that you? :)
  • Nice job but why video it like that? Seems like it would have been a lot easier to get ones bearings if it was full video.
