Keep in mind that bullets , sprays and hammers only sometimes work. Their limitations are seen when adrenaline flows, mental illness or drugs are present in so many offenders.
WASP spray is an alternative (inexpensive and carried legally) also works pretty well.
It sprays in a narrow stream with enough pressure to reach a 10-15 ft range.
( The average untrained person is probably better protected if you paint some red dots on your face and wear a sign that states you have a contagious air born deadly virus. :E )

If you decide to legally carry, please learn about what correct ammo to use that offers 'hydrostatic shock' (ammo that spreads out) to internal organs to stop a threat without passing through a subject, then passing through 3 more innocent people.
Also think about taking weapon retention training to keep your weapon secure and invest in good leather that is designed to deter someone from disarming you.

AFAIK, the NRA, for members, has a supplemental policy that offers 'paid for' legal services if/when the lawsuits fly in your direction.
Even in a good shooting where you think you were justified, there are so many loopholes in the laws regarding the use of firearms and deadly physical force laws that can work against you. It took many years to re-write the HR 218 LEOSA act to get it right.
