OK so my DD 2001 S-80 POJ Volvo dropped yet another coil pack Thursday night leaving her on the side of I-475 in a not so good part of town. Towed it to the local Volvo dealership and they told her besides the #5 coil the left ball joint was toast. So they quote her $974 for a coil , ball joint and oil change!
I call them and ask for a break down of the quote, they quoted her one hour for diagnostics even though I told her that night it was a coil, $148 for the coil + 1.5 hr labor, $187 for the ball joint + 1.5 labor, $104 for the oil change :E. So I tell him to forget the coil, and that considering we have spent over $8000.00 in repairs at their shop on this POJ they may want to do some recalculations to get the price down for her! By time it was all said and done it cost me $503 for everything. this includes the coil and 6 spark plugs from their parts department (to be installed by me). The cost of that $148 coil was only $83 by charging it under Al Smith! :R
We leave them drive to Al Smith in B.G. and she leases a 2014 Dodge Dart SXT Rally for the same price that she was paying for her Volvo.
So now we go back to the Volvo dealership get the service writer to meet up out back so I can change out the coil and take it home. I opened the hood, removed 7 torx bolts, one 10MM bolt holding the coil in place, removed the coil, disconnected the wire connector, re-installed the coil. All in less then five minutes with the service write up guy watching me. I looked at him and asked, you charge 1.5 hours to do five minutes of work? :R
All the time my DD is sitting in her brand new 2014 Dodge Dart. I looked at the guy and said to him well it looks like shes not going to have to pay any more outlandish bills for service on a Volvo anymore.
If you think it's only Chrysler dealers over charging, you might want to rethink that idea. BTW she got 4 free oil changes with the lease also! :B
